These are very useful for a dynamic online encyclopedia and save users from having to regularly update that kind of information. However, when using this kind of template, a few things should be kept in mind.

The first template calculates the year, then the second one calculates the number of days remaining in the last year (doing the last year lets us get the leap days right). If someone enters an invalid date, the two other templates treat it as that many days after the last valid date; thus March 40th = April 9th.
