I ordered an 8 inch digital caliper from Home Depot online. Got a call a few days later, some guy at the warehouse says they're out of 8 inch calipers, and will replace it with a 12 inch caliper. I said that's awesome. Then I get the 8 inch caliper... felt disappointed.

Just got a new door about 4 weeks ago. Used Home Depot as a guide to getting a lower price. 16x7 Steel door, no insulation, $750 installed. Its a Wayne Dalton door, from GDS, a local business. Just shop around and have them fight over getting your business.
That said, I did decide to go with something a little better than the typical Schlage and Kwikset options you find at Home Depot or Lowes when I replaced my (25 year-old) locks last year. In Northern VA, we have a service called Propane Taxi. They deliver - swap out empties or you can buy a spare tank. They charge the same as Home Depot but fill the tank to 20 lbs. The JDs sold at Home Depot are not any worse than the ones you listed. The problem comes in when you get idiots who think they're getting JD Farm Equipment quality and reliability for half (or less) the price. A Home Depot JD will last you 5-10 years given decent maintenance.
