The Nutcracker (‹See Tfd› Russian: Щелкунчик [a], romanized: Shchelkunchik, pronounced [ɕːɪɫˈkunʲt͡ɕɪk] ⓘ), Op. 71, is an 1892 two-act classical ballet (conceived as a ballet-féerie; ‹See Tfd› Russian: балет-феерия, romanized: balet-feyeriya) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set on Christmas Eve at the foot of a Christmas tree in a child's imagination.
The 2010 "Battle of the Nutcrackers" began its run on December 6, 2010. It included two very traditional versions - the 1989 Bolshoi Ballet's Nutcracker and the 2009 Royal Ballet Nutcracker - as well as the Berlin State Opera Ballet's Nutcracker, Maurice Bejart's Nutcracker, and the Ballet of Monte Carlo's Casse Noisette Circus.
