In reply to Wild Child's post on June 1, 2013. Sorry for the typo and confusion. I meant to type <alt-x>. In other words. type 215B. then hold down the <alt> key; depress and release the 'x' key, then release the <alt> key. Those fractions are unicode characters.

Most of the usual "body text" fonts include these characters: Arial and Arial Unicode MS, Calibri, Cambria, Consolas, Lucida Sans Unicode, Segoe UI, and Times New Roman and some others that aren't supplied by Microsoft. In the Insert > Symbol dialog, for any selected font, make sure the dropdown in the lower right corner says ...
There were no characters for other fractions. But there are now: activate the Insert tab of the ribon and click Symbol > More Symbols. Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. Many fonts do contain characters for 1/3, 2/3, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 in the Number Forms character subset.

MS Word’s Symbol library (Insert Symbol More Symbols) holds all of the ASCII and Unicode characters for creating your own fractions on-the-fly. The image above shows the location of the denominators, the fraction slash and most numerators. The ¹, ² and ³ numerators are located much closer to the top of the symbol library.

Most fonts contain made-up fractions for 1/3, 2/3, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8, and you can define AutoCorrect entries for those if desired.
Select " (Normal Text)" from the "Font" dropdown. Select "Unicode (hex)" from the "from" dropdown. Select "Number Forms" from the Subset dropdown. You should see some additional fractions. If not, select "Arial Unicode MS" from the "Font" dropdown. Select one of them, e.g. ⅓ and click AutoCorrect... Type 1/3 and click Add. Repeat for the others.
Check your AutoCorrect Options to see the fractions added. Uncheck the Autoformat as you type option for fractions. If you want, run the backup in the utility again. If prompted whether you want to save changes to the global template Normal.dotm when closing Word, say yes. (These formatted entries are stored in the normal template.)
