I like My Melody too, but Kuromi is actually the one who got me into Sanrio as an adult. I love the "bad girl with a heart of gold" archetype and she kinda falls into that.

According to Onegai My Melody, they WERE friends from the START. However My Melo kept putting Kuromi in trouble "unintentionally" with her signature smile over 5000 times if I remember correctly. She's even good friends with My Melody. Kuromi's my favorite Sanrio character, but sometimes I feel conflicted because she's portrayed differently in the two shows. In Onegai My Melody she's mean but she has her good moments, and in the Hello Kitty shorts I love how sweet she is. What do you guys think of this stark contrast in her personality?
