Darryl and Marty are openly gay recurring characters, and partners. Series creator Danny Arnold worked with the National Gay Task Force in developing the characters of Darryl and Marty. Initially, both were presented as flamboyantly gay, but as the series progressed Darryl began acting and dressing more conservatively.
