    The fix was embarrassingly easy. I had somehow inadvertently clicked on the little tiny oval switch at the right end of the ribbon bar, causing the ribbon to close. You will have to change the batteries, however, don't just change the batteries, unplug the dongle> For some reason, unplugging the dongle to have the computer resee the mouse while changing the batteries will fix the issue. 911 people found this reply helpful.

    To open Excel in Safe Mode on a Mac, hold the Option key down as you click the Excel dock icon when opening Excel.
