A grocery store ( AE ), grocery shop ( BE) or simply grocery [1] is a foodservice retail store that primarily retails a general range of food products, [2] which may be fresh or packaged. In everyday U.S. usage, however, "grocery store" is a synonym for supermarket, [3] and is not used to refer to other types of stores that sell groceries.
The term "wet market" came into common use in Singapore in the early 1970s when the government used it to distinguish such traditional markets from the supermarkets that had become popular there. [ 41] The term was added to the Oxford English Dictionary ( OED) in 2016, as a term used throughout Southeast Asia. [ 42]
There are two types. Government-owned companies are legally normal companies but mainly or fully national owned. They are expected to be funded by their sales. A big customer might be the government or a government agency. The other type is government agencies which might also do activities competing with private owned companies.
