When my kids were toddlers (1982-1988) I don’t recall ever hearing this phrase used to encourage children to verbalize rather than use my son’s favorite method, pointing and grunting. Nowadays, you hear the phrase “Use your words” coming from the lips of every young mother, teacher and comedian across the land. So when did this become a “thing” and who started it?
“Use words” is so much more elegant. Yeah, but then you don’t have that motherly feeling like in similar phrases, like “Eat your dinner,” “Wash your plate,” “Clean your room,” etc. TruCelt July 11, 2012, 2:55pm
When someone says someone showed a lack of “common sense” what they really mean is “that person is much stupider than the average (common) person.”. The term originating among content creators on YouTube, tiktok, etc. where the algorithm will penalize your content if you use words like “die” or “kill”. Though it has to be said I’ve only encountered it in the context of posts saying stuff like “look at this dumb term the idiot kids are using” not actually being used unironically
SylverOne November 10, 2009, 12:55am 6. Giraffe: ::stomps off, sulking:: Aw, come back and play! Would it make you feel better if I suggested the word Giraffe as a ridiculous safeword. ASL doesn’t have ‘words’ per se, but the signs usually represent the concepts of language. Simple words have signs that aren’t usually interpereted in multiple ways, but can be. “Love” can be seen as ‘love’ or (if the signer were to act out the sign with more emphasis) ‘really love’, ‘cherish’, ‘canonize’, and so on.

I have a bad habit of omitting key words in a sentence. Words that if went unnoticed, would leave the sentence nonsensical. I also have some kind of weird quirk with homophones. Like using the word residents when I should have used residence. Or there instead of their. I do both of these. Many of my SDMB posts would be gibberish if I didn’t ...
Some regional American accents are strongly associated with a single word or phrase - because people almost always use it when demonstrating how that accent sounds: Long Island: “Lawn Guyland” Boston: “pahk the cah in Hahvid Yahd” Any others? I’d also be interested to hear examples from other languages/countries.
