@katemor Its not true that App Store no longer has El Capitan as download. It does not have it as download, if your Apple-ID has never registered a machine with El Capitan. Otherwise they are still there. And your link points to a place, which charges $20 for Apple software. Not quite legal...

I was setting up a 2009 iMac, El Capitan was the best it could do. But the old OS-X did not have the app centre. I could only find .pkg download. In the end I got it to work as I had limited time, the next week I found some old Leopard disc that I could have used to make things a little easier.

I'm unable to complete the installation of El Capitan. I only have the HD & RAM memory installed (no battery). Other Mac OS-X Versions are installing OK (even Windows). But, when I try to upgrade to El Capitan it never finishes the update. Also, it will not install via USB thumb drive. I have tried everything!

Picked up a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 17”. It has the latest firmware on it. It came with El Capitan installed and I hadn’t realised it was a slightly older model that I couldn’t upgrade. I’ve tried everything imaginable to get this %#*@ thing back to El Capitan but nothing works.. I get this same infuriating message every time.
