203 votes, 89 comments. true. A "vulture capitalist" hedge fund bought the Tribune a while back. The hedge fund's MO is buying then gutting well-regarded regional newspapers, massively cutting staff, and milking subscriptions for 5 years or so hoping people don't notice the difference.

Have rent prices in Chicago been influenced by this RealPage company price fixing things? The company is apparently owned by a Chicago-based private equity firm called Thoma Bravo per a Reuters article dated 11/16/2023.
Being usable is no longer the point. If anyone thought the critics of the hedge fund that purchased the paper were being overly dramatic in their predictions, this should be proof: this is very clearly a webpage that has been designed to deliver as many ADs as possible.
Last time I was in Chicago (as the tribune towers renovation was finishing up), I noticed the back facade of the tribune tower (the part facing east that was newly added- i think) was just an ugly windowless side. This was the side facing the site of the tribune tower east, so obviously something was going to happen.
I asked about phase 2 when I was touring the Tribune Tower condos a few months back. So I guess take that with a grain of salt. Maybe they were downplaying the future development next door to sell the remaining units in the historic tower, but the economics of building a supertall in Chicago are not at all favorable right now.
Now that the Sun-Times is owned by Chicago Public Media, it is definitively the best city's best paper now—and it's free, though you should make a donation. (The Sun-Times being a top news source would have sounded like an ironic joke 10 years ago).
I went digital on my Tribune subscription some years ago because it was easier, cheaper and more dependable than delivery of the print edition.
