The Gregorian calendar is the calendar used in most parts of the world. [1] [a] It went into effect in October 1582 following the papal bull Inter gravissimas issued by Pope Gregory XIII, which introduced it as a modification of, and replacement for, the Julian calendar.
The International Fixed Calendar (also known as the Cotsworth plan, the Cotsworth calendar, the Eastman plan or the Yearal) [1] was a proposed reform of the Gregorian calendar designed by Moses B. Cotsworth, first presented in 1902. [2] The International Fixed Calendar divides the year into 13 months of 28-days each.
A calendar era is the period of time elapsed since one epoch of a calendar and, if it exists, before the next one. [1] For example, it is the year 2024 as per the Gregorian calendar, which numbers its years in the Western Christian era (the Coptic Orthodox and Ethiopian Orthodox churches have their own Christian eras).
The formulae can be used proleptically, but "Year 0" is in fact year 1 BC (see astronomical year numbering). Ussher deduced that the first day of creation was October 22, 4004 BC on the proleptic Julian calendar, near the autumnal equinox. Lightfoot similarly deduced that Creation began at nightfall near the autumnal equinox, but in the year 3929 BC.
