I think it's a reasonable proposition. For low-medium home usage, I've always used 2-3 sets of cartridges per year in the past. £24 per year for 50 pages per month is probably better VFM for original HP cartridges. My current printer takes a set of 4 cartridges, so Instant Ink is always going to better VFM. interstellaflyer Posts: 2,055 Forumite.
Incidentally, when I set up my own firm in the 1980s, laser printers cost £2000, and my first inkjet printer was £800. Despite 40 years of inflation, printers are a fraction of the price. I expect that they are being sold at, or below, the cost of manufacturing them, with the hope of making some money from selling the ink cartridges.

Yes, they send new cartridges automatically. The printer communicates with HP via the internet to tell them how many pages have been printed and also when the ink levels are getting low.
