In 2014, the show saw its first Broadway incarnation, opening that April at the Belasco Theatre and winning the year's Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The production closed on September 13, 2015. A national tour of the show began at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre in October 2016 before closing at the Kennedy Center in July 2017. [2]
The theater originally had 1,600 seats at a time when the population of Monterey was just around 6,000. For a long time the Golden State Theatre was the largest theater between San Francisco and Los Angeles. In June 1980, the musical premiered in out-of-town tryouts at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which is located in Washington, D.C. [4] The musical opened on Broadway on August 25, 1980, at the Winter Garden Theatre, [5] and then moved to the Majestic and finally to the St. James, closing on January 8, 1989, after 3,486 performances and 6 previews.
The site, along Sloat Boulevard between 19th and 34th Avenues about two miles (3 km) south of the Golden Gate Park, was donated to the city in 1931 by Rosalie Meyer Stern. [1] She was the daughter of Marc Eugene Meyer, who named the park for her late husband Sigmund Stern, a philanthropist, nephew of Levi Strauss, and son of David Stern.
