Robert Chaittle Turner (c. October 15, 1855/56 – June 15, 1909) was the first African American Bahá’í and one of the nineteen Disciples of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. Life. Robert Turner was born on a farm outside of Norfolk, Virginia in the mid-1850s. As a teenager, Turner moved to California and worked for the Palace Hotel.
