Hi all. I'm new to saltwater although have many years of fresh water and planted tank experience. I'm setting up a new 50 gallon reef tank 39x13.5x23 (LxWxH) )with 15-20 gallon sump. Ofc I would have loved to setup a bit wider lower high tank but went with this as this is a more sleek looking tank custom build tank with sump.
The new one is about 70+ total gallons of saltwater, the tank is IM novo 50 gallon and 20 gallon trigger emerald sump. The return pump is VarioS 2, bubble-magus curve 5 PS, tune osmolator 3155 with 5 gallon trigger RO tank, 2 XR15, MP10w & MP40w power heads, Kessil H160, and few more items. The newest item was the Neptun Apex controller.

I originally planned on not getting a tang and just sticking to small fish that get no larger than 5’’ but a tomini only gets about 6’’. I have small pair of clowns, small wrasses, cardinals, hogfish, dottyback.
Here is a list of equipment that I already have, followed by what I plan to get in the near future. The Gear I already Have (majority gathered from @Bulk Reef Supply ) Tank - 50 gallon Low Boy Frag Tank. Return pump - Seltz D 1000 DC Controllable Aquarium Pump (1000 GPH) - Hydor USA. Overflow Box - Eclipse M Overflow Box (800 GPH) - Eshopps.
So I cam across a zoomed frag tank at my lfs for $150 and I had been looking at doing a frag/growout tank for some time so I decided to buy it. I am still deciding on how I want to set it up but i figured I would post pics and update as I go along. My plan is to drill two holes for overflows and have dual returns.
no, a reservoir would be a space for RO/DI water which gets transferred into the return chamber. Saltwater in the sump and ro/di in the top off reservoir. Top off reservoir can be as simple as a bucket. Or can be a acrylic container. anything that holds water and is food safe. your ATO (automatics top off) transfers the water into the return ...
The back glass on most aquarium's isn't tempered and they sell thin overflow kits. You didn't mention how you'll deal with evaporation. Without a lid, my 45g losses about 2-4 gallons a week depending on weather. Without a sump, you'll have to do it by hand, gravity or by sensor. All three have their downsides.
There are pico tanks that change 100% of the water at a time as well as tanks that don't do any water changes at all. If your nitrate/phosphates are in line, I would recommend smaller amounts weekly just to replace lost trace elements (3-5 gallons). If you have issues with elevated nutrients, I would change larger amounts weekly. Okay thanks.
hello so the other day i posted about an aggressive dwarf angelfish in my tank. i am removing him and looking for options to replace it. my tank mainly has zoas, euphylia, and anemones. fish wise without the aggressive fish thats being removed i have 2 ocellaris clownfish, 2 purple firefish, 1 lined blenny, 1 hi fin goby,1 banggaii cardinal ...
