Procedure was: run avastclear (safe mode), after reboot delete Prefetch data (I do this after major changes to save the poor OS from getting confused) and check the directories to delete any left, run RegHelp, reboot, Reghelp again (and each time it finds a lot of Avast entries), install and set up 2006 from scratch, reboot.
Tried everything and then realised it was avast causing conflict. Weird as I've used it for years. Anyway I uninstalled via add/remove programs and was advised to download the avast uninstall utility. Ran in safe mode and it deleted. Or so I thought. Go into my pc security centre and it's telling me that avast is on and scanning (!!)

Remove avast manually. - Delete all files. - Delete all folders. - Delete all registry entries. Logged. Online scanners (URL/File/Java/others) - INDEPENDENT support (chat for Windows, Windows apps, and many other things), just state the problem/ask your question in the channel and have patience.
1. To utilize "Uninstall Utility" to remove the [old] 4.8 version. 2. To install the [new] 5.0 version. many people said they can't install 5.0 completely or can't run very well. The main reason probably may be the uninstallation of old one is not complete.
