Well, the PA-6 is keyed so that it won't work in all systems that use the 'trapezoid' socket. In fact, the docking station for a C400 laptop (which itself uses a PA-6) requires a PA-9. It was much less hassle to just get a bunch of PA-9's when I was working with that generation of Dell computers.
