If they had raised their minimums across the board to $15 at that time, it would have given Publix a reputation as a high paying employer. Then they could have lobbied for the $15 minimum wage and all of the smaller grocery chains that make a much smaller profit margin would have had a hard time staying in business paying everyone $15.
For one, Memphis is a Kroger stronghold. Even though Publix has dominated Kroger in other markets like Huntsville, Kroger has been in Memphis for a long time, and it’s probably a better financial prospect to just keep growing in the markets they’re in. I worked for Publix back in the day and got treated well (never missed days, good work ethic, etc - I did it for 6 years). My whole family at one point worked at Publix. Grandfather, Father, Me, my brother, Aunt, Uncle, and Cousins.
Publix employees are all owners of Publix, as they all are given shares of the company. Owners cannot form a Union. EDIT: I was misinformed when I worked for Publix. You can learn about your rights to unionize here. Thanks for the corrections, it was insightful to read more into it. Sorry for spreading misinformation.
