The building was designed by Louis I. Kahn and constructed at the corner of York and Chapel Streets in New Haven, across the street from one of Kahn's earliest buildings, [3] the Yale University Art Gallery, built in 1953. The Yale Center for British Art was completed after Kahn's death in 1974, and opened to the public on April 15, 1977.

It was first exhibited at the British Institution in February 1821 and won a prize of £200 (equivalent to £21,536 in 2023) for the best picture.
The Paston Treasure is a c. 1663 oil painting depicting two figures among the family treasures of Sir William and Sir Robert Paston, a father-son pair of English adventurers. Commissioned by either Robert or William in the early 1660s, [ 1] it serves as a historically rare record of a cabinet of treasures in British collecting.
