The University of Moratuwa is an independent state university in Katubedda, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka overlooking Bolgoda Lake. The University of Peradeniya site touches the natural environment of the lower slopes of the Hanthana mountain range. Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology was established in 1999 at BOC Merchant tower, Colombo as a nonprofit company by guarantee with the ability to award Bachelor of Science degrees following amendments to the Universities Act the same year, thus gaining recognition from the Minister of Higher Education.
The restructuring of the university system in Sri Lanka affiliated the institute with the University of Kelaniya in 1980.
