Originally from Hanover, New Hampshire, US, Jon Spencer attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he was part of the noise rock band Shithaus, with Tod Ashley (Cop Shoot Cop, Firewater), before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1985 where he formed the band Pussy Galore with Julia Cafritz, relocating to New York in May 1986.
