The sanding ports on the machines play an important role, so they need to be right at the source for best results. The router table is a good example where the dust port is right behind the blade.

It sticks out in front 3-3/4 inches, and also out the back 3-3/4 inches. That's the fence itself. Measurements do not include the locking handle and its mechanism.
