Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, textbook, or scientific journal. Articles and other encyclopedic content should be written in a formal tone. Standards for formal tone vary a bit depending upon the subject matter but should usually match the style used in Featured - and Good -class articles in the same category.

When a MoS guideline offers a choice of style, use only one alternative consistently throughout an article, and do not unreasonably alter a choice that has already been made.
A template window then pops up, where you fill in as much information as possible about the source, and give a unique name for it in the "Ref name" field.
