Ostomy system. An ostomy pouching system[ 1] is a prosthetic medical device that provides a means for the collection of waste from a surgically diverted biological system ( colon, ileum, bladder) and the creation of a stoma. Pouching systems are most commonly associated with colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies. [ 2]

Parastomal hernia is the most common late complication of stomata through the abdominal wall, occurring in 10 to 25% of the patients. [1]
Ileostomy is a stoma (surgical opening) constructed by bringing the end or loop of small intestine (the ileum) out onto the surface of the skin, or the surgical procedure which creates this opening. [ 1] Intestinal waste passes out of the ileostomy and is collected in an external ostomy system which is placed next to the opening.
Indications. Kock pouch ileostomy is indicated for patients who are unfit for ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) because the anus and anal sphincter will be removed during the operation; and patients who develop severe incontinence after IPAA. [ 1] A Kock pouch need not be created during the initial colectomy surgery. [citation needed]
The diagnostic criteria are, one or more of the following factors present for the last 3 months: abnormal functioning of normally innervated and structurally intact muscles, minor abnormalities of sphincter structure/innervation (nerve supply), normal or disordered bowel habits, (i.e., fecal retention or diarrhea), and psychological causes.
