Since 1915, the BASS anthology has striven to contain the best short stories by some of the best-known writers in contemporary American literature.
Alice Ann Munro (/ m ə n ˈ r oʊ /; née Laidlaw / ˈ l eɪ d l ɔː /; 10 July 1931 – 13 May 2024) was a Canadian short story writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. Her work, especially in its tendency to move forward and backward in time, and with integrated short fiction cycles, is said to have revolutionized the architecture of the short story.
These fair-play "rules" were summarised by one of the members, Ronald Knox, in an introduction to an anthology of detective stories. They were never intended as more than guidelines, and not all the members took them seriously. The first American member (though then living in the UK) was John Dickson Carr, elected in 1936.
