ASA has since rebranded to USA Softball on January 1, 2017, and is the national governing body of softball in the United States. Minnesota Softball is governed by a board of directors and consists of approximately 176 community based youth associations, 16 club youth associations, and 60 adult leagues who are formed into 7 districts.
USA Softball was founded in 1933 as the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) with a tournament held in Chicago that was organized by Leo Fischer and Michael J. Pauley. The following year, the 1934 National Recreation Congress recognized the ASA. Shortly afterward, the ASA was located in Newark, New Jersey.
The ISC World Tournament is an annual tournament held each August to crown the best softball club in North America. Teams from six regions (US East, US Central, US West, Canada East, Canada West, International) are represented at the World Tournament. The ISC allocates berths by region to qualifying tournaments throughout North America.
The 1971 ASA / DGWS Women's College World Series (WCWS), the third in its history, was held in Omaha, Nebraska. On May 14–16, softball teams from 28 colleges met in that year's national fastpitch softball tournament, still the largest number of teams to play in a single-site WCWS. The Saint Louis Billikens softball team represents Saint Louis University in the NCAA Division I college softball. The team participates in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). From 1987 until 1991, the team was a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. From 2000 until 2005, the team was a member of the Conference USA (C-USA).
