Amsallem was born in Oran (Algeria) to Elie Amsallem (1922-2019) and Sylviane Cohen Amsallem (1929-2022). He started learning the piano at age 7 and also took up the classical saxophone at the local conservatory.

Background. In the 70s Malik was a member of the Jimmy Lyons' quartet and the Cecil Taylor Unit. In 1984 he was leading a trio who played regularly in Boston. The drummer was Sydney Smart, who played with Malik in Taylor's ensemble at Antioch from 1971 to 1973, and in the Jimmy Lyons Quartet that debuted in New York in 1972.
