    After years of having this problem, Adobe has not offered any fix (at least as of the date of this writing). I think I have the solution. I know there are many programs that will convert a PDF to a Word or WordPerfect document. By doing that, I can avoid using Adobe Acrobat and paying its subscription fee altogether.

Select Printer 'Adobe PDF', then click Print Options, click Properties, and untick 'Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts'.     I ran the office 2013 repair tool. Computer requested restart. Complied with request. Opened a word document and used the Acrobat add in tab create button to make the current word document into PDF.

    Be a bit warned, this is a bit clunky but very doable. After you go into shapes, select "Line" and draw your line. After the line is corrected, you will see the line options to the right (next to #1). When you click on that you can directly change the thickness and you'll also see a "Gear" icon, click that (#2) This brings up the Line Properties.
