The base was named in honor of World War I pilots Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis (1896–1921) and Chief Engineer Oscar Monthan (1885–1924), both Tucson natives. The affiliated Pima Air & Space Museum acquired 77 acres (31 ha) in January 2021 for the construction of the Tucson Military Vehicle Museum. The new museum will house a large number of mostly land vehicles, including 50 donated by the Imperial War Museum. The museum is adjacent to Pima Air & Space Museum and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
