Perhaps tension on an electric lap steel is actually more or less the same as when figuring out tension for an acoustic lap slide guitar? The guitar is 25-1/5" scale so .013-.056 would be what I'd do if it was an acoustic lap slide, perhaps beefing up the two plain strings a little.

I've been playing lap steel guitar for about 7 years now. I depend on the musical talents of others to figure out how to play a song and then tab it out. If it wasn't for Bert, I imagine my playlist would look pretty pathetic. About a third of my performance repertoire is Bert's arrangements with backing tracks. And he gave them all away for free.

10 strings is easy enough - I disagree with the idea 6 is easier. a beginner lap steel can definitely digest 10 strings and no other moving parts and save years of frustration and limitations. 10/12 strings means chords 6-8 means dyads (two note chords most of the time) so skip it.

The Jerry Byrd recommend bar is 3/4 x 2 3/4" with an indentation in the back. The smaller and lighter bar is easier to pick up and use just the tip as well as just move around more. Things that are all important to non-pedal playing. The indentation in the back is for your thumb to push out the bar for reverse slants.

  8. Lapsteel tuned to guitar standard tuning? - Steel Guitar Forum

    bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=388326

Atlanta Ga. USA. Posted 27 Jan 2023 1:01 pm. The standard guitar tuning offers a lot of potential. Anything you have heard in the blues rock world that was played on slide guitar using that tuning can be played on the lap steel. The guitar variations like drop D, E etc. can be tweaked on the lap guitar and off you go.

The Steel Guitar Forum. I spent a lot of time researching where to buy a lap steel, 6 or 8 strings, which tuning and so on. I am beyond happy that I did my homework. Melbert Guitars did not disappoint!! I not only own a lap steel, I own a custom lap steel. The workmanship is very high quality and the builder has a wealth of knowledge to share.

    bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=369635

It's important to know that the BR-9 was by far the most common lap steel guitar to come out of Kalamazoo wearing the Gibson badge; over 13,000 were marketed between 1947 and 1959. That's more than double the entire prewar Gibson lap steel production of all models combined. The point being -- BR-9s are not exactly scarce.
