The original North American area codes were established by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1947, after the demonstration of regional Operator Toll Dialing during the World War II period. The program had the goal of speeding the connecting times for long-distance calling by eliminating intermediary telephone operators.
Since 2009 all users in the region have been required to include the area code even when dialing local calls. At 46,666 square miles (120,860 km 2), it is the largest numbering plan area in California with approximately 29% of the state served by area codes 760 and 442. [2]
The three area codes form an overlay numbering plan, and are also overlaid by area code 917 of a numbering plan area that comprises the entirety of New York City. Area code 212 is the original code assigned for all of the city in 1947. After a restriction of 212 to just Manhattan in 1985, area code 646 was assigned to Manhattan in 1999.
