Simmesport is a town in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,161 at the 2010 census . [4] It is the northernmost town on the Atchafalaya River , located near the Old River which connects the Red and Atchafalaya rivers with the Mississippi River .
Pomme de Terre WMA is located north of LA 1, Simmesport, and the communities of Red Fish and Yellow Bayou (site of the Battle of Yellow Bayou, with access from LA 451 through Hamburg. La 451 makes a semi-circle around the south, east, and north sides of the WMA with Pete Laborde road running north to south on the west side.

The Sherburne Complex [1] is a joint land management venture of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that began in 1983. The area consists of 43,637 acres (17,659 ha), and is managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

In November 1863 at Simmesport, the regiment merged with the 11th and 12th Louisiana Infantry Battalions, becoming the Consolidated Crescent Regiment.
