After the old Saint Raphael's Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005, St. Patrick's, Holy Redeemer, and St. Raphael's were merged to form the new Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael. The merger of the three downtown parishes was announced in October 2007 and executed on July 1, 2008, part of the ongoing major realignment of parishes in the diocese.
The parish was visited by St. John Neumann, who was the bishop of Philadelphia and therefore the parish's bishop, in 1855 and 1857. The Diocese of Harrisburg was established by Pope Pius IX on March 3, 1868. [4] St. Patrick's was named the pro-cathedral of the new diocese.
With origins of the first Mass occurring on the present day site of the cathedral dating from 1803, St Patrick's was extensively rebuilt after a 1996 fire devastated the original church that was established in 1854. A tower was built on the original St Patrick's Church which was consecrated in 1880 and blessed in 1883.
