May 2, 2020. #1. This may have bee covered many times before, but I am just in the market for getting started with some kind of flight computer. My desires are leaning toward Samsung/Garmin Pilot. Reading somewhere that Garmin Pilot was created for aviation, whereas Foreflight was created to sell IPads, I like the Garmin Pilot idea better.
The big problem with Android tablets is vendor bloatware. Samsung is the only manufacturer still building premium spec'd tablets, and they insist on skinning the interface and installing their own apps for cloud storage, etc. I recently bought a Tab 8" and tried to make GP work on it. Basically unusable.
Display name: Kenny Taylor. Nov 6, 2022. #10. I'm running iFly GPS with my daughter's 7" Samsung tablet that must be 6-7 yrs old and a Stratux. Runs great. Garmin Pilot just didn't look appealing. I toyed with Foreflight for a bit, because Foreflight, but I prefer the interface and simplicity of iFly.
It is an 8" tablet that's the size of most 7" tablets, because it has thin side margins. It's also very light and thin. It has 64gb of ram, which is all you'd need for anything you'd want to do with Garmin Pilot, plus plenty of room for mp3s, pdfs, etc. If you want, you can add another 128gb with an SD card.

Oh well. Garmin Pilot equals it in every possible way. But I don't use tablets in the cockpit. 696 and 430W with all their overpriced database updates work better and more consistently than any tablet. Problem was that Android tablets was actually very bad and unreliable until maybe 1/2 year back, but modern ones (Samsung for example) are excellent and technically are better then iPAD-s. I use a Samsung S3 and have had no problems over the past 1-1/2 years I have been using it. YES - Garmin Pilot Android version was "buggy" up until the last few updates for me. Over the past few months I have not had any crashes or losing of data. I have never owned an Apple product - phone, tablet, or watch - and never will.
After missing a few months of flight time, finally got my biannual flight review done and am ready to fly again. For many years I have used Google Nexus 7 2013 tablet with Avare + Avare I/O external plugin to connect with XGPS150a GPS unit for position data. That tablet broke a while ago and I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab Lite A7 tablet.
