Omaha, Nebraska. / 41.25861°N 95.93750°W / 41.25861; -95.93750. Omaha ( / ˈoʊməhɑː / OH-mə-hah) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. [ 6] It is located in the Midwestern United States along the Missouri River, about 10 mi (15 km) north of the mouth of the Platte River.
The history of Omaha, Nebraska, began before the settlement of the city, with speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa staking land across the Missouri River illegally as early as the 1840s. When it was legal to claim land in Indian Country, William D. Brown was operating the Lone Tree Ferry to bring settlers from Council Bluffs to Omaha.
1869 The old territorial capitol building given to the City of Omaha for a high school. 1870 Omaha was made a port of entry by an act of Congress and S. A. Orchard was appointed the first surveyor of customs. 1871 Name of the post office changed from "Omaha City" to "Omaha." 1871 The first meat packing establishment in Omaha opened by David Cook.
Geography. Omaha is located at 41°15′38″N 96°0′47″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 118.9 square miles (307.9 km 2 ). Situated in the Midwestern United States on the shore of the Missouri River in eastern Nebraska, the Port of Omaha helped the city grow in significance as a trading city.
Dundee is a neighborhood in central Omaha near 50th and Dodge Streets. Originally a separate city, Dundee was annexed by Omaha in 1915, but the residents fought annexation in the courts until 1917. Elkhorn takes its name from the Elkhorn River and was incorporated by an act of the territorial legislature in 1889.
The first comprehensive preservation ordinance in Nebraska was adopted by the Omaha City Council in 1977. The commission was created after the demolition of the Old Post Office, when the pro-preservation organization Landmarks, Inc. advocated its creation.
