Smart View, like Bluetooth has limited range, but if the device you are picking with SmartView is within that range, it will pick it up. My couch shared a wall with my neighbor's TV so, even through cinderblock, the signal penetrated. It only becomes a problem if the other device being picked up has the same name (like Samsung TV or something).

I am trying to connect my Tab A to my Samsung Smart TV using Smart View for casting tablet contents, but it won't allow me to connect while I'm using a VPN on the tablet. Why on earth not please?! It just disconnects "because I'm using a VPN on my tablet". Any solutions please to get around this issue. (I want to continue using VPN.)
