The biggest change in the history of US Army enlisted ranks came on June 4, 1920. On that day congress passed a law [32] that changed how enlisted ranks were managed. It created seven pay grades, numbered one to seven with one being the highest, and gave the president the authority to create whatever ranks were necessary within those grades.

Military ranks are a system of hierarchical relationships within armed forces, [ 1] police, [ 2] intelligence agencies and other institutions organized along military lines. Responsibility for personnel, equipment and missions grow with each advancement. Ranks should not be confused with paygrades, such as E-1, W-2 and O-5.
The rank of wonsu is the highest military rank except taewonsu. Its insignia is a large single star, based on the insignia of marshal of the Soviet Union which is itself based on the marshal's star.
