Appearance. The administrative divisions of Virginia are the areas into which the Commonwealth of Virginia, a U.S. state, is divided for political and administrative purposes. Some are local governments; others are not. However, all local governments (counties, independent cities, and incorporated towns) are political subdivisions of the state.
Incorporated cities in Virginia are independent jurisdictions and separate from any county. As of 2016 [update] , there are 190 incorporated towns and 228 municipalities, [1] some of which are more populous than many independent cities , but are not incorporated as cities and are therefore situated within a parent county or counties.
The extinct counties of Virginia (alphabetically) are: Alexandria County (1749–1791) and (1846–1920) (was part of the District of Columbia 1791-1846), changed its name to become Arlington County in 1920. Charles River County (1637–1643) renamed York County.
