If you completed all the troubleshooting steps recommended by fellow Community member @Lynn_B and are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Print & Scan > Option & Supplies > Utility > open printer utility. Test > print test page. So maybe it is something to do with intalling drivers but not having OS X actually use them because it already had generic drivers (which the envy seemingly doesn't work with) installed.
