Pokemon like Sableye, Mawile, Absol, and Pinsir really benefited from Mega Evolution. In Mawile's case, it was introduced in a generation where it didn't have any STAB moves, it gained STAB and Fairy type in later generations, but was still pretty terrible, but it's Mega Evolution turned it into something that was viable and powerful.

I'm a Gen 1 lover, and I'm pretty certain it will always be my favourite generation. Part of that (maybe a big part) is absolutely nostalgia. A lot of people have a favourite gen that's heavily influenced because it's the first one that hooked them into the series. You can't really replicate that 'brand new' feeling again.
