  11. 2001 740iL - Rear shock removal? - bimmerforums.com

    www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2292332-2001-740...

If you have an autozone near you, they can loan you a spring compressor. You pay full price and when you return it, they refund you. I bought this one on eBay and used it on my wife's car. I think it would be too big to clamp on the rear spring on the e38 so I do not recommend it even tough it was heavy duty. Good luck and congrats on the new car.
