The Lassen Community College Gunsmithing Program was established in 1945 and is the oldest gunsmithing school in the United States. The program offers Associate in Science Degrees in Firearms Repair and General Gunsmithing, as well as Certificates of Completion for Pistolsmith, Riflesmith, Long Guns, and Gunsmith Machinist and Metal Finishing.
The program began as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, established on 3 March 1969, [1] at the former Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. Students at these academies are organized as cadets, and graduate with appropriate licenses from the U.S. Coast Guard and/or the U.S. Merchant Marine.While not immediately offered a commission as an officer within a service, cadets do have the opportunity to participate in commissioning programs like the Strategic Sealift Officer Program (Navy) and Maritime Academy Graduate (Coast Guard).
