The park consists of 855 acres (3.46 km 2) along the shoreline of the man-made 69-acre (0.28 km 2) Standing Stone Lake. The 11,000-acre (45 km 2) Standing Stone State Forest surrounds the park. [1]
The state park is near the site of the first landing on April 26, 1607 of Christopher Newport and the Virginia Company colonists before establishing themselves at Jamestown. The park includes cabins, areas for camping, fishing, and swimming, a public beach, and over 19 miles (31 km) of trails for hiking and biking.
Virginia opened its entire state park system on 15 June 1936 as a six-park system. The six original state parks were Seashore State Park (now First Landing State Park ), Westmoreland State Park, Staunton River State Park, Douthat State Park, Fairy Stone State Park, and Hungry Mother State Park.
